I do not have a first degree in Geography. Can I still apply?
Our standard requirement for our Master's programmes is a 2:1 from a UK university or the international equivalent. Although many succesful applicants will have a first degree in Geography or a closely allied subject, we will also welcome applications from students with other academic backgrounds.
I do not have a 2:1 or the international equivalent. Is it worth my while applying?
Although a 2:1 from a UK university or the international equivalent is our standard entry requirement, we do occasionally accept applicants who do not have this requirement if they have, for example, relevant work experience or particularly good references. If you apply your application will be given careful consideration by the Master's Admissions Tutor.
May I apply for more than one programme in the Department?
The online application system does not put any limit on the number of applications you can submit. However, the admissions committee is looking for strongly focused applications and so applicants are advised to consider carefully which programme it is they are most interested in before applying.
When do your Master's programmes start?
All our Master's programmes start in September. It is not possible to start at any other point. Please see the following website for term dates: note that induction to the Department takes place during registration week.
What is the workload like for students on a Master's programme?
A full-time student can expect to attend around 8-10 hours a week teaching, and undertake private study such that the total number of hours studied is 35-40 a week.
Is it possible to study part-time, and how would this be structured?
All our Master's except for the MSc Aquatic Resource Management are offered on a part-time basis. As a part-time student you would take the same classes as the full-time students, but you would take only half the amount of modules at any one time. You would probably take one or two modules a term, which would mean coming in for around four hours a week. These four hours may or may not be all on the same day depending on which modules you take.
Overseas students should note that it is extremely rare for the government to award a student visa for part-time study, unless you are already working in Britain with a work permit.

Do any of your courses run in the evening?
No, all our programmes are taught during usual working hours.
Do I have to send two academic references?
We would prefer to see two academic references. If it is several years since you graduated from your first degree we will understand if this will not be possible, and will accept one academic and one non-academic reference.
